A few years from now, we may look back at 2020 and recognize a watershed moment for education. With many schools and colleges facing increasing danger from changing demographics, we’re at a point where some of the business models underlying higher education are going to start to shift. The Indian higher education system has expanded at a fast pace by adding more than 20,000 colleges and more than 8 million students in a decade and as of today, India has more than 800 universities, with a break up of Central, State, Deemed and Private universities.

Globally, higher education has more to worry about than the immediate crisis of public health and budget shortfalls. The road to recovery lies through change and innovation.

Online Education

Online education is slowly and surely becoming popular with interest from working professionals to learn new things, technology.  More number of organizations like Byju are emerging to target online education.Higher education is also slowly adopting the digital era.

  • According to credible reports from KPMG and google study, it is predicted that online education in India is likely to be a 2 Billion USD industry by 2021.
  • Around 28 Crore students are going to be enrolled in schools by 2021.

Online education is useful to remove barriers to classroom-based learning. Students can easily revise key subjects/topics.

Digital and Comprehensive  Online Assessments

Evaluation of students is one of the key areas of academic curriculum. Success of education largely depends on the type of evaluation done. Evaluation of the students has largely been focused on analysis of theoretical knowledge of the student.Using an online assessment tool makes it much easier for you to collect all data from your students. When you want to engage a large group in your instruction, you want a significant percentage of them to take the assessment. Students usually write theory answers in the exams and it is being evaluated by one of the evaluators.

Blockchain Technology

Blockchain Technology

Blockchain is an emerging technology. It is going to dominate innovation across many businesses in the coming decade.

It is useful when there is a need for collaboration, distributed database/ information. Student records are endless, and with blockchain technology, assets like attendance, courses, payments toward tuition if they attend a private school, grades, coursework, and even their diploma can become part of their personal blockchain record. Block-chain is useful for many areas of education including examination management, student credentials verification, certificates verification etc.

Demographic Changes

These shifts are leading to a new outlook on how higher education must serve students in the future. In particular, increasing numbers of nontraditional students and changes in the concept of the ‘typical’ student will continue to force institutions to consider alternative approaches to higher education.

Personalized learning

Personalized learning

Traditional classroom based learning is becoming obsolete. It is removing location, device and timing constraints. Television shows, sports events are being streamed in a personalized manner.

Personalized learning is an educational approach that aims to customize learning for each student’s strengths, needs, skills, and interests. Each student gets a learning plan that’s based on what he knows and how he learns best.

Similar to it, education delivery or the learning process must be personalized. Traditional classroom-based lecture processes may not help each individual. Every individual has some strengths and weaknesses and the pace of understanding a particular topic is different for everyone.

  • Ability to absorb topic and understanding increases due to personalized learning
  • Personalized learning can help the student to learn, understand topics as per individual speed
  • It can be done from any location
  • It is classroom independent.

Revolution in Exam Management through AI

AI can bring a lot of changes to current exam management. AI based proctoring or auto remote proctoring can enable  institutions to conduct exams without any need of infrastructure or logistic.Remote Proctoring technology can enable students appearing for exams sitting at any location. System can track , monitor remote users using advanced video, image, audio streaming

with intelligence to do analysis if a student is appearing for the exam in a fair manner.

Currently this service has been successfully adopted and implemented by higher education institutes and universities for conducting entrance exams. It has helped them to remove infrastructure requirements and the huge administrative cost of managing such exams.

Ultimately, keeping track of these big-picture developments is key to navigating the future of teaching and learning.
