The Colonel's Retreat is located in the charming hamlet of Bir, in the bosom of the Dhauladhars, in the Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh. The hamlet is at an elevation of 5,000 ft (1500 meters) and hemmed by the majestic Dhauladhars, and abruptly rise to 11,800 ft (3600 meters) forming a picturesque yet formidable wall to the north.
